After a rough night at a previous hostel, I arrived at Mateus with low expectations. Let me tell you, Mateus completely blew me away! The staff's courtesy shone through from the very beginning. Despite arriving well before check-in, looking travel-worn and frustrated, they kindly allowed me to store my luggage. They even checked in on me (without being intrusive) to see if I needed anything. I also had the privilege of a delightful conversation with the owner and another guest, which truly added to the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Location? Perfect! Mateus sits within walking distance of Fontainhas' charming restaurants, pubs, and cafes. It's the ideal blend of historical charm and modern comfort. The rooms themselves are well-equipped with all the necessary amenities. The complimentary Wi-Fi was a lifesaver, especially considering the spotty mobile network coverage in the area. But what truly sets Mateus apart is its character. Scattered throughout the hotel are hidden nooks and crannies waiting to be discovered. Curl up with a book and a cup of coffee in the common area, browse through their charming library (a small bookcase, but full of character!), or relax in the tranquility of the backyard garden. The staff went above and beyond by recommending hidden gems to explore and providing a must-try list of local delicacies. If you're looking for a place to unwind, feel welcome, and experience the true spirit of Fontainhas, look no further than Mateus. It's a hidden gem waiting to be discovered!

We spent three nights at the nine-room Mateus Boutique Hotel, a beautifully restored old Goa mansion in the heart of Fontainhas, surrounded by a number of excellent restaurants and cafes. Each room is different. All are charmingly appointed with gorgeous old style furniture. The bathrooms are modern. The toiletries, however, were rather sad—not what one expects at a boutique hotel. Certainly, the hotel could do with a bit of sprucing up but we enjoyed our stay, in no small measure due to the terrific team—Jeffrey, Saroj, and Derrick. Jeffrey in particular did everything he could to make our stay wonderful. He even got local poi bread for breakfast one morning because we asked for it. Saroj made simple breakfasts that were tasty and substantial—eggs any style with toast/bread and one daily Indian dish (different every day and vegan each day we were there!) along with fresh fruit, juice, tea/coffee. Fresh milk (a non-dairy option as well) rather than powdered creamer with the tea/coffee would’ve been nice. Self-serve tea and coffee are available at all times in the lobby. The hotel owner was there during our stay and lovely to chat with. The recommendations he gave us were great—as were the recommendations from Derrick, the hotel manager. One peeve: the hotel charged an additional fee for paying with a credit card. It wasn’t a big amount but this additional charge came as a surprise. It wasn’t mentioned in the booking and when I complained about it whilst checking in I was told I could pay cash to avoid this additional payment. Who carries that kind of cash? It would be good to make clear at booking time that credit card payments will incur an additional charge. We would happily return to the Mateus Boutique Hotel!

Amazing place located centrally that makes touring the hot spots in Fontainhas super easy. But more than anything I was to thank the staff for being so warm and welcoming. Especially Muna who was so kind and accommodating. She recommended some really amazing food spots and made our stay so much easier in Panjim. It was a truly memorable stay for us! ♥️

What a disappointment! Beautiful architecture welcomes you but it's all downhill from there on. The place is grubby and poorly ventilated. Interior design that they claim is basically non existent. Worst breakfast and pathetic coffee. The little outdoor plunge pool area is poorly kept and minute. Room was ok. Up your game please or charge less!

Small, friendly guest house in a lovely old building along a quiet street in the heart of the Old Quarter. I was offered a late check out time and was able to leave my luggage for the day, which was greatly appreciated. If you are looking for a peaceful place to stay within a close walk to nice cafes and shops then it’s the place to stay.
